The Philosopher's Apprentice

I was in the Punk scene from the age of 15, and from it I learnt a lot about life. I out-grew the Punk scene at 20 and have been finding my own identity ever since. The Punk scene taught me a lot about the blindness and ignorance of humans, but even this movement was limited, so I left it. By this I mean that just like "normal" society, Punks could be just as judgemental, snobbish and narrow-minded (just in different ways).

I credit myself with some foresight, but not in any paranormal way (but then what do I know about the true nature of the mind and the universe?). For example, just before leaving the Punk movement, I predicted a coming together of Punk with certain types of Heavy Metal. People thought I was being bizarre, seeing things that had no basis in reality (yet). Six months later there were "Punk-Metal" nights, with Punks and Headbangers getting into each others' bands. This was the mid-'80s, and "Speed" Metal seemed less pretentious to the Punks, and American "Thrash" Punk was getting Headbangers excited. There were Punks craving for the "Death" Metal they had no idea they would come to love, and Headbangers were finally getting their own Punk vitality and honesty in the form of "Hardcore". When "Grunge" came along, the lines between Punk and Metal blurred beyond redemption, and modern Hardcore has kept it that way. I mean, look at bands like Pantera - talk about removing distinctions! So anyway, I don't know how everyone didn't see this merging coming, but no one can figure out how I saw it coming (the signs weren't that obvious apparently).

Also, coming from the Punk scene, it is really surprising that I could see the end of the Berlin Wall. I mean, Punks are the paranoid ones that care about what man is doing, so nuclear war and the power-play between the powers that be were of great concern to them. Many felt that while we should continue to fight for disarmament, it was nonetheless futile because the powermongers wouldn't be able to stop their games, and we'd all die in a nuclear holocaust. However, later on, I saw that the Soviet Union was in trouble, that the gap between East and West was growing so great, the people wouldn't be able to take it much longer. Then Gorbachev came along, and something struck me about him straight away. It was like every time I looked at him smile, it was as if he was really smiling at some hidden joke, only something he knew. One day the thought came to me: "This guy is gonna dismantle the Soviet Union", and then a unified Germany came to mind as well.

Now I have the Russian crime wave to ponder, and the growing number of Neo-Nazis in unified Germany......but I can't say I see any answers. Still, even as I look at present realities, I hold hope for humanity yet, but of course parts of me aren't so sure.
